He then removed toPecos County, Texas, where he was employed on acattle ranch. Upon the organization, shortly after,by John Maddox of Austin, Texas, of a surveyingparty to survey Crockett and Iecus Counties, he joinedthat party as flagman, but, as the Lapan Indians fromthe Santa Rosa Mountains of Mexico were on the warpath, and as the twelve government scouts guardingthe surveying party were recalled to patrol the RioGrande, he was sent as a guard with the pack train,On this expedition the party was seven days withoutprovisions. While reconnoitring, alone, for provisions,he found the trail of a band
