In themidst of the staircase thatleads to the lapidarygalleries, there is a rect-angular slab, with a greatLatin cross on it adornedby braids, which from theirfineness and the fact thatthere is a bead in everyrow, in the manner fre-quently characteristic of theGreeks in the eighth cen-tury, seems to me to be aGreek work of that other little crosses ofvarious dimensions, someenriched like the largerone by very minute braids,others in low relief andsmooth, occupy the lateralspaces between inscriptionsin the Armenian Latin inscription atthe foot of the cross waswithout doubt added in thetwelfth century.
