Picturesque Ireland : a literary and artistic delineation of the natural scenery, remarkable places, historical antiquities, public buildings, ancient abbeys, towers, castles, and other romantic and attractive features of Ireland . Eu-rope gives an outline of the strange romance, which he deems of Frenchorigin. In the thirteenth century Bishop Voraginius of Genoa, made specialmention of it in the Golden Legend, and in 1483, Wynkin de Worde re-hearsed it in the Life of Saynte Brandan in its earliest English form. Theearly popularity in France of the Irish Saints voyage is illustrated by theallusion of Pierre St. Cloud—that among the graceful resources of a troubadourwas his ability to sing a tale Of Arthur brave or Tristram bold,Of Charpel, or Saint Brendan old. French interest in the subject has not abated even during our time, judging fromthe fact that two French versions, as well as the original in Latin, were printedin Paris in 1836. In Blackiuoods Magazine (vol. xxxix.) may be found a spiritedtranslation of one of the early French romances ; and Denis Florence McCarthyhas treated the theme in an original poem, from which an extract has been made. * Sketches in Erns and Tyrawley, pp. loo-l.
