Carotid body, light micrograph. The carotid body is the main chemoreceptor that registers the levels of oxygen (pO2), carbon dioxide (pCO2) and pH in the blood. It is located in the bifurcation region of each common carotid artery. It contains two cell types, clear type I glomus and dark type II sustentacular cells, interspersed by blood capillaries and nerve bundles, and separated by connective tissue septa.
