Close-up of Swan Boat swan's face Boston Public Garden Boston MA USA

The Boston Public Garden was established in 1837 and was the first public botanical garden in the United States. The 24 acre park, which was once a salt marsh, was designed by George V. Meacham. In 1859, an act by the Massachusetts General Court preserved the Public Garden as an open space. The Swan Boats date back to the 1870's when the City of Boston granted Robert Paget a boat for hire license. In 1877, he capitalized on the bicycle principle and with the help of others, developed a catamaran which housed a foot-propelled paddle wheel arrangement. To cover the captain, he suggested a swan.
