Telescopes at Concordia base, a research station in Antarctica. The base, Concordia Station, was completed in 2005. It is over 1000 kilometres inland, high on the Antarctic plateau at an altitude of 3233 metres, at the location called Dome C. It is a permanent, all-year research station, the third to be built in Antarctica, and is jointly operated and run by France and Italy. The unpolluted and clear skies provide good viewing conditions for astronomers. The location is also used for meteorological and glaciological research. Photographed soon after construction was completed, during the first winter at the base.
