We may best set an arbitrary point for the demarca-tion of the new style midway between these two dates, withthe practical separation of the eastern and western empires. The style may be said to have arisen from the orientalizationof Roman art, and itself largely contributed to the formation ofthe Saracenic or Mahommedan styles.
