VELVET SCOTER Fuligula fusca {LinncBus) This species is a fairly common autumn and winter migrantto the British Isles. It generally keeps well out to sea. It is a rather larger bird than the Common Scoter, and ofa dense velvety black, with a small white spot behind eacheye and a white bar across the wing. The adult male hasthe whole of the plumage black (glossed above and duller ^y. The bill is orange-yellow,with a large black basal knob and a narrow dark line alongthe culmen. Legs orange. SURF SCOTERFuligula perspicillata {Linncsus) This North American species is a rare straggler inautumn and winter to these isles. The adult male in summer has the plumage velvety blackwith a tinge of brown on the throat, and may be known fromother Scoters by the presence of a broad patch of white onthe forehead and another on the nape. In the female thenape patch is present, though often so faintly marked that itcan hardly be seen. There is no white bar across the about 21 in.; wing 9*5 in.
