Portugal, Lagos - Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

Lagos is a city and a municipality at the mouth of the river Bensafrim and along the Atlantic Ocean. Lagos is an ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history. The name Lagos has a Celtic origin and is derived from the word Lacobriga. Lagos first became a settlement of the Carthaginians, who recruited Celtic tribesmen in their war against the Romans (the Punic Wars). Later it became colonized by the Romans, becoming part of the Roman province Lusitania. Some Roman remains can still be found in Lagos and the surrounding countryside. On the waterfront near the entrance to the harbor is a small fort called Fortaleza (or Forte) Nossa Senhora da Penha de Franca , which is more commonly known as the Fortaleza (Forte) da Ponta da Bandeira ("Fort of the Flag Point"). It was constructed from 1680 to 1690, when Portugal was under Spanish rule, to protect the coats against the British fleet.
