Sandstone carving sculpture marking 2nd World War massacre at Lidice near Prague Czech Republic Europe


In June 1942 the children of Lidice were sent to Chelmno concentration camp, near Lodz in Poland and gassed in trucks. The village of Lidice, north-west of Prague was chosen by Hitler to be razed to the ground in revenge for the assassination of Nazi deputy Reinhard Heydrich. The village was falsely thought to have harboured the assassins, 2 Czech agents trained in the This 1982 sandstone sculpture, where the village once stood, depicts the children being separated from their parents.
