THE FLORIDA PHOSPHATE INDUSTRY. 351. MINING LAND PEBBLE BY HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. In working the deposits of landpebble there is a greater variety inmethods. The pebbles of phosphateare intermingled with clay and sand, sometimes in the proportion of four orfive parts to one of phosphate, so thatit is necessary to handle a large amountof material to yield even a moderatedaily output of cleaned simplest and most extravagant wayis by the use of shovels and wheel-barrows, still in use at some of theworkings. In some cases the materialis dug up by grapple dredges like thoseused in river and harbor excavations, running on a railroad track and loadingthe dirt and phosphate into cars whichconvey it to the washing and drying-plant. Again the hydraulic system ofthe western gold mines is adapted tothe requirements of the land pebbleworkings and the material is handledrapidly and cheaply. A mining plantof this character, in use by the BoneValley Phosphate Company, near Bar-tow, Florida, is shown in a full pageillustration acc
