The Pennsylvania Memorial to soldiers from the US state who gave their lives in the Great War in Varennes, France

Varennes-en-Argonne is mainly known because it’s the place where Louis XVI was caught in June 1791 during his flight towards Austrian Belgium. But you can find in this little city the Pennsylvania Memorial which dominates the town. This memorial was erected by the State of Pennsylvania in 1927 to honour her sons who gave their lives in France. It was constructed in the Greek style and has splendid views of the Aire Valley. During 2013 it is undergoing restoration at the expense of the State of Pennsylvania in preparation for the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War in 2014. The inscription reads: "In Honor of her troops who served in the great war among who were the liberators of Varennes 1918 and in grateful appreciation of their services this memorial is erected by the state of Pennsylvania - 1927"
