Marshallice and S. Bensonice. VANDA With a few exceptions the Vandas have lost the popularitythey once possessed. A quarter of a century or more ago theywere grown largely in all extensive collections of indoor plants, and great pains were taken to produce fine specimens. Evenwhen not in flower the stronger growing Vandas are bold, hand-some plants, with large, channelled leaves, borne in two rankson stout erect stems. The flowers vary a great deal in size andappearance. V. Amesiana has small, whitish flowers, while V, San-. VAN DA CCERULliA. THE MOST USEFUL ORCHIDS 163 deriana has flat flowers five inches broad. The latter has stout, large leaves, while V. Hookeriana has slender terete leaves. Most of the Vandas require a high temperature and a moistatmosphere, but when new leaves cease to form for the season, andthe tips of the roots become sealed over, a much reduced watersupply will suffice, although, as the species are all evergreen, absolutely dry conditions at the roots must not be should be done only when the condition of the rootingmaterial or the increased size of the plant renders such an operationimperative. The new year is the best time for re-potting, and ifthis is not necessary the surface of the rooting material should beremoved and new sphagnum given. In the course of time Vandaslose some of their lower leaves and become leggy; when thisis the case, the lower part of the stem and roots should be cut away,as there will be plenty of roots from the part
