Bust of Thomas Cochrane in the Fife restored village of Culross
Bust of Thomas Alexander Cochrane who was the10th Earl of Dundonald near the Townhouse in Culross. He achieved fame as one of the most daring and successful naval captains of the Napoleonic Wars. It's reputed that the fictional character of Horatio Hornblower in the novel by C. S. Forester and also Jack Aubrey in the Aubrey–Maturin series written by Patrick O'Brian, were partly based on Cochrane's exploits. He lived from 14 December 1775 to 31 October 1860 and is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Despite his very busy naval life he also developed the family estates around Culross which is pronounced 'kooros'. It is now a beautifully restored village containing the finest surviving examples of Scottish vernacular architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries. The National Trust for Scotland has been working in Culross since the 1930s to conserve its historical past.
