The fourth annual show held by the Tacoma Dahlia Society Friday and Sat- urday, August 21 and 22. proved to be one of the greatest dahlia exhibitions ever seen in the Northwest and the thousands of visitors who attended are still praising the show, and commend- ing the successful efforts of the offi- cers of the society. The entire show was the result of the amateur growers' work and the beautiful flowers were a iredit to any one, whether professional grower or not. Nowhere could better flowers be produced than were shown. The show was held on the roof garden of the Rhoads department store and every person was invited and urged to see the great show absolutely free. Many thousands of flower lovers went. and all were enthusiastic in praise of the flowers. No doubt a great many will try to grow dahlias next year, and the result will be a more beautiful Tacoma, as well as greater business for those who are in the trade and who sell bulbs. Probably .".. flow- ei's were shown and the list would very nearly reach four hundred named sorts, besides a fine lot of seedlings, some of which will no doubt be grown in the years to come, and be classed among the best standard sorts. The display l>y Metropolitan Park Board was splendid, and included many sorts of perennials, besides over 100 sorts of dahlias. Mrs. Geo. Sheffield of Vashon Island had a wonderful display, both in quan tity and quality, liut she acted as one of the judges and consequently her flowers did not score. She estimates she
