THE GLOUCESTER HOSPITALS There were four hospitals in or near Gloucester, three of which arementioned by LYSONS VIEW OF ST. BARTHOLOMEWS. St. Bartholomews stands in what is still called the Island, becausethe Severn in older times flowed on all sides of it. St. BartholomewsHospital was founded in the reign of Henry II. by William Mjparty, aburgess of Gloucester, as a hostel for a guild of workmen who werebuilding Westgate Bridge, under the direction of Master NicholasWalred. In the reign of Henry III. the Church of St. Nicholas wasattached to it, and the mmates had the privilege granted to them of electingtheir own prior. It had then become a refuge for decayed workmen wnowere not less than 52 years old.
