The river at this point takes a course almost due west,and Rock Island lies on the opposite bank directly south,while Moline is situated at a point directh- east of RockIsland, where the river makes a bend from the north. In the middle of the river and connected bv threebridges, one leading to each city, is the famous RockIsland, than which no more beautiful spot is to be found intra\eling from the Alleghanies to the Rocky DAVENPORT AND BRIDGE OVER MISSISMTFI RIVER AS SEEN FROM GOVERNMENT ISLAND. crowded the levees by the score. There is an earnest rivalrv among the cities,and the population of any one loses several thousandwhen mentioned by a resident across the stream, but aman on the in the middle of the river imparted theintelligence that Davenport numbers 25,000 souls, RockIsland 20,000, while Moline marched up some 15,000strong.
