Battle of the yalu Chinese warship king yuen 1894 naval Sino-Japanese War
The King Yuen took part in the Battle of the Yalu River against the Imperial Japanese Navy on 17 September 1894 where she was sunk. It involved the Japanese and the Chinese navies, and was the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War. The Yalu River is the border between China and Korea, though the battle was actually fought at the mouth of this river, in the Yellow Sea. A Japanese fleet under Admiral Sukeyuki Ito was attempting to disrupt the landing of Chinese troops protected by a fleet under Admiral Ding Ruchang. The engagement continued for most of the day, and while it was not the first of pre-dreadnought technology on a wide scale (the Battle of Foochow in 1884 between the French and Chinese predated it), there were significant lessons for naval observers to consider. The King Yuen 經遠 was an armoured cruiser that was built by the Stettiner Vulcan AG shipyards in Stettin, Germany for the Beiyang Fleet. The King Yuen displaced 2,850 tons and had a speed of 16 knots. Her armament consisted of two inch (210 mm) guns, a secondary armament of two inch (150 mm) guns and a torpedo armament of four 18 inch (457 mm) discharges. To this was added 8 machine guns. Total crew was around 270 officers and men. Dimensions; length of , a beam of and a draught of Armour was (241 mm) inch for belt; 8 inch (203 mm) turret. 320 tons of coal could also be carried.
