Statue to Robert Fergusson Scottish poet 1750-1774 outside Canongate Kirk Edinburgh


The statue is outside th Kirk of Canongate. Robert Fergusson was born in Edinburgh and a poet during the Scottish enlightenment. He wrote in Scottish English and the Scots language (not Gaelic). At age 24 after sustaining a head injury coupled and with melancholia he died in 'Bedlam'. He was buried originally in an unmarked grave. He had a major influence on the works of Robert Burns. The statue shown here is by the sculptor David Annand and unveiled in 2004.
