Too much rain caused the Kilauea volcano to erupt in 2018. The long-running eruption of Kilauea, one of Hawaii's most active volcanoes, entered an extraordinary new phase on May 3, 2018, spewing incandescent lava 200 feet into the air. The unprecedented eruption, which destroyed hundreds of homes, caused the summit caldera to collapse before it ceased four months later in September 2018. Volcanic eruptions can alter the planet's climate according to their volcanic explosiveness index. On an 8 degree scale, volcanoes above level 5 may have enough power to change global climate. For this to happen, the eruption has to emit more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide and inject material into the stratosphere, leading to a drop in global temperature.
