Archives of internal medicine . ^ the polariscope and the acidosisindex/ This is shown graphicallv in Chart 1, which has been plottedfrom the values of Table 1. It will be noticed that the rise and fall ofthe two curves is very similar in direction, notwithstanding the fact thatthe curves tend to diverge in the higher values. This point will bereferred to Chart 1.—Curve of oxybutyric acid estimated by polariscope, and acidosisindex plotted from record of diabetic patient (Table 1). Chart 2 is also plotted from Table 1. Here are compared the curvesof the ammonia output and the acidosis

Here are compared the curvesof the ammonia output and the acidosis index. For this comparisononly those days were selected from Table 1 on which the patient wastaking no alkali, as on these occasions the ammonia more nearly representsthe degree of acidosis. Table 2 records the events of a severe diabetes in a boy aged 12; onlythose days are recorded on which no alkali was taken; this patient is. stillimder occasional observation. Chart 3 is plotted from this record andshows a comparison of the curves of the ammonia output and theacidosis index. T. STUART HART 371 Cases of this kind could be multiplied, but they all show a verydefinite parallelism in the curves of the acidosis index and those of theacidosis estimated by the polariscope, and as calculated on the ammoniaoutput. In Table 3 will be found the record of the f
