The tunnel is double tracked, and measures29 feet from side to side and 21 feet 6V2 inches from the baserail to the crown. The method by which it was pierced involvedthe tunnelling of a pioneer bore paralleling the centre line ofthe main tunnel—a feature that was new and aroused the in-terest of tunnel engineers the world over.
