In those days the street railways of Boston were notconsolidated, there were a number of independent com-panies and rivalry among them, I think, was was some question as to whether they would allunite in in the plan of forming the association, and while. I think some did not participate in the business proceed-ings of the convention, all were deeply concerned as tothe banquet; was there to be a banquet in the evening?and would the supply men be invited ? were the vitalquestions of importance the last afternoon. Finally the hour for the banquet came and the supplymen were ver} much in evidence ; at first it was as formaland dignified as the most sedate could have desired, butas the evening wore away and the magnificent speechesdrew to a close, the meeting was in the hands of themembers. In the meantime our friend Kerper, of Cin-cinnati, had gradually worked himself to the front untilhe sat next to the master of ceremonies, and materiallyaided in bringing about a spirit of good fellowship andfeeling that I have never seen equaled at any of ourmeetings since.
