Almandine crystals. Almandine is the iron-alumina variety of the garnet group of minerals. Its characteristic colour is a brownish red, though it can tend towards purple and violet. It occurs in schists and other metamorphic rocks, often in the well-developed rhombic dodecahedral shapes, as seen here, with individual crystals the size of large marbles.
