The Indian Chief

The engraving is of a painting by Joseph Rusling Meeker (1827-1887) an American artist who became well known for his paintings of the American West. He was born in New York State but moved to Kentucky and eventually to St Louis and settled there. He was a founding member of the St Louis Art Society and served as its President. The Indian Chief is a fine example of his feeling for the West and Western landscapes.
