The Southeast quarter, with a portion of the Northeast, is calledCapitol Hill, as the Capitol stands on the western brow of this exten-sive plateau. Although not as fashionable as the Northwest quarter,it yet has a numerous population of people of large means, and manyelegant residences, together with blocks of plain, neat houses andplaces of business. Within a few years it has developed consider-ably. Long Bridge extends from the southwestern terminus of Mary-land Avenue across the Potomac River to the Virginia shore, and isa mile in length. It was completed in 1835 at a cost of $100,000,and, singular as it may seem, only one-third of the money appropri-ated by Congress to build it was expended. It is doubtful if there isanother case on record of a public work being constructed tor lessth
