"Main gate of the city overlooking the largest bridge, the "Tour of the Causeway" was built in Gothic style around 1380. It was a centerpiece of the Great Bulwark of Verdun defense, composed of two powerful circular towers topped by a crenellated parapet of battlements (I love that word). The door to harrow timber consists of an arcade classic and a pediment added in 1690. Royal Military Prison from 1754 and opening by a drawbridge now gone, the door opened on the right bank of the Meuse and the Metz road that led to the Battlegrounds."
