Russian rocket engineer Sergey Korolyov with cosmonauts, Crimea, USSR, c1960. Korolyov (1907-1966) was the leading Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer during the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), who made the first manned space flight on board Vostok 1 in 1961, is immediately to the left of Korolyov. From a private collection.
