Of the 25 Uca in each pan approximately 50 per cent were males and 50 per cent of the males had a large chela on the left side. Both sexes were used in this experiment in order to determine the amount of variation that might be due to loss of appendages in experiments where sex is not taken into account. The appendages were ar- bitrarily numbered consecutively from one to 10 beginning with the chela on the left side. The chela on the right side was appendage number Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ); Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass. ).
