Fritz Richard Schaudinn (1871-1906), German microbiologist and zoologist. Schaudinn distinguished between the amoeba causing tropical dysentery (Entamoeba histolytica) and harmless microbial flora normally found in the human intestine. In 1905 Schaudinn (with Erich Hoffman) found that syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum, a spirochaete bacillus. Schaudinn proved that hookworm infection occurs through the skin and also researched malaria. He also proved the alternation of generations in rhizopod protozoans and scale insects. He died of a gastrointestinal abscess caused by an amoeba infection, probably acquired during his research.
