Stone carving at Ajanta caves, Maharashtra, India. The 29 Buddhist caves were excavated between the 2nd century and the 1st , and the 4-7th but they were not discovered until 1819, approximately 150 years ago by a British officer. The 29 caves contain outstanding paintings depicting the life and times of Buddha are good examples of ancient Indian art.
