Tliey require plenty (^f manure and <;<)()(! cultixation. Old and decayed branches, and at least half the previous season's th, should be cut away early each spring-, and a little cutting;- back after the first bloouiiiiL;- will insure more late flowers. The so-called tender Roses must be carefully protected in winter by covering them with leaves and evergreen boughs ; and the hardy si)rts will be ren- dered more vigorous and productive of fine flowers if they, too, are similarly protected. HYBRID PERPETUAL ROSES Alfred Colomb. Raised from Jacqueminot. l^rilliant car- mine-crimson ; very large, full, and of fine globular form ; ex- tremely fragrant, and in every respect a superb sort; green wood, with occasional pale greenish thorns; foliage large and handsome. One of the most useful of all sorts for general cultivation. Budded and on own roots. Anne de Diesbach. Carmine, a beautiful shade ; very large ; a fine garden sort ; does not thrive on its own roots. Augusta Nie. Delicatepink; cupped and vigorous. American Beauty. A grand Rose for either forcing or out- door culture. Its very double flowers are of a deep crimson color and very fragrant ; it is of full and very perfect form, with the petals finely imbri- cated ; a constant bloomer and strong grower. \'ery desirable in every way ; its rich "June- rose " scent would alone com- mend it, to say nothing of its many other good qualities.
