Implantation. Illustration of a human embryo implanted into the uterine wall 7 to12 days after fertilisation. At this stage the embryo is known as a blastocyst. The blastocyst consists of a hollow ball of cells. It is not the outer ball of cells of the blastocyst, but a localised thickening of cells inside it (blue) which will eventually develop into the embryo proper. The outer blastocyst cells (pink) can be seen growing and dividing. It is these cells which will form the placenta that serves to nourish the growing foetus.
