The two upper turbines were built by Escher, Wyss & Com-pany, and the lower one by J. J. Rieter & Company, each to give. The lower tut bine is of Jonval type, and is connected to a350-hp, three-phase generator, which, at 170 r. p. m., gives 420 OPERATING COMBINATIONSUnder normal operating conditions the lighting circuits arefed by the two single-phase alternators in the lower station, andthe power circuits (including the railway) are fed by the twoalternators in the upper station. Should an accident occur thereserve generator in the lower station can beoperated in parallel with the generators on thelighting circuit. If, however, one of the powerservice generators in the upper station is dis-abled the reserve generator can be used for thepower circuits. The single-phase, 2000-volt current leaves thelower power station through six lead-coveredcables laid in clay pits. Upon reaching the citythe voltage is reduced to 120 volts for lightingby transformers placed in cylindrical housingsat convenie
