The Pillar of Shame was erected in 1997 to mark the eighth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing and has become a focal point for the pro democracy movement on campus. Created by Danish artist Jens Galschiot, the Pillar of Shame is part of a series of four sculptures, each signifying a major tragedy.
