In figure 72A is shown one of these invaginations more highly magnified. There are in all eight pairs of these, as in those insect embryos examined by Graber (1891) and Wheeler (1892). The first pair is the largest, those caudad successively smaller, the last being faint and not easy to discern. Each invagination is funnel-shaped externally. Inter- nally it is formed by a cluster or rosette of long pyriform ectoderm cells as shown in the figure, the entire structure strongly suggest-.
