Burning splint test. Illustration of a burning splint being used in a laboratory experiment to help identify a gas produced by a chemical reaction. If the gas is hydrogen, it will ignite with a characteristic squeaky 'pop'. If the gas is non-flammable, the flame will be extinguished. Examples of common non-flammable gases are carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Further tests can be carried out to identify the non-flammable gas.
