A fisher-man is telling a story, and the rest of the men arelooking at him or smiling at one another : the on-looker naturally seeks the face of the story-teller, andprincipality is established. IV. This brings us to the logical conclusion thatthe heightening of light or shadow on the principalobject is subjective. The more interesting the objectis, the more will it attract the eye ; and the more itattracts the eye, the less need will there be of artificialaccents : but when the object is not very interesting,accents are essential. If the portrait of A. J. V. Chodzko, for example, hadbeen placed on the picture surface in a more conven-tional manner, the black tie would have been needless ;for Mr. Chodzkos face is quite interesting enough toattract and hold the eye, whilst the white shirt-frontand black coat are sufficient to establish the truth ofthe flesh-values.
