This brings us to the logical conclusion thatthe heightening of light or shadow on the principalobject is subjective. The more interesting the objectis, the more will it attract the eye ; and the more itattracts the eye, the less need will there be of artificialaccents : but when the object is not very interesting,accents are essential. If the portrait of A. J. V. Chodzko, for example, hadbeen placed on the picture surface in a more conven-tional manner, the black tie would have been needless ;for Mr. Chodzkos face is quite interesting enough toattract and hold the eye, whilst the white shirt-frontand black coat are sufficient to establish the truth ofthe flesh-values.
