This book is an answer to the call of thewild, and it is our sincere wish that the very prac-tical hints and advice here given may be of serviceto the novice and not altogether unwelcome to theveteran. Our own experience teaches us that no matterhow often we visit the woods we always find some-thing new to learn and no one man knows it all. Especially do we wish this book to be of serviceto the youth of this country, to those healthy, whole-some American lads whose normal minds give thema natural desire to spend their vacation in the openwith their trusty Stevens on their shoulders. For their benefit we suggest that they organ-ize Stevens Rifle clubs. to practice shooting at targets and thus fit themselvesfor their vacation trips in the woods, and also todevelop that manly self control and calm resource-fulness w^hich were the marked characteristics oftheir forbears, and which have done so muchto make the American people great and theircountry one that is respected by every nation inthe world. Let each group of boys organize a club, selecta president, treasurer, secretary and a correspondingsecretary, the latter to attend to the correspondencewith other Stevens Rifle clubs. The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company willgladly do all in its power to encourage and help theorganizations in their work of perfecting themselvesin the proper care and use of firearms. When Mr. I. H. Page of the J. Stevens Arms &Tool Company suggested to the editor that he shouldget up this book, the latter had so much work on handthat he was in despair until he secured the talentedyoung artist and arctic explorer, Mr. Bellmore to help
