Composite photograph showing Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1807-1873), Swiss palaeontologist, surrounded by fossil fish of which he made a systematic study. He published his findings between 1833 and 1844 in a five volume work. Agassiz is also remembered for his work on glaciation where he showed conclusively that glaciers advanced and retreated over time. The background of this image shows the stromatolites from Australia, fossilised forms of the earliest life form thought to be the primitive blue-green algae or cyanobacteria.
