Family Ericaceae Genus Arbutus Species unedo Arbutus unedo L known commonly as The Strawberry Tree or The Killarney Strawberry Tree is native to southern Europe and possibly Ireland It is an evergreen small tree The urn or bell shaped flowers can be white or pinkish and are produced in Novermer and December The common name derives from the globose red to yellow fruit that is reportedly edible with varying reports on the taste but not like that if its namesake the strawberry Apparently some clones are tasteless In Spain Corsica a wine is made from its fruit In Portugal the tree is known as Medronheiro and the fruit is used for an alcoholic beverage called medronheira This particular tree resides in southern California
