'Jerusalem Delivered', 19th-century illustration. This scene of battling crusader armies, featuring a Turkish sultan named Solimano and dead and dying soldiers, illustrates an epic poem about the 11th-century First Crusade by Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). Tasso was an influential poet of the Italian Renaissance. His most important work (illustrated here) was 'Gerusalemme liberata' (1581, 'Jerusalem Delivered'). The poem consists of 20 sections (cantos). This scene is from the ninth canto. Artwork published in Paris in 1810.
