Bone tissue, light micrograph. Proximal aspect of a growing femur. The upper surface of hyaline articular cartilage is stained blue as is the wide band of hyaline cartilage of the epiphyseal growth plate. Between these zones of cartilage is growing cancellous, or spongy, bone (green) with bone marrow stained red. Columns of growing cancellous bone are noted in the metaphyseal-diaphyseal region. In the joint space part of the fibrocartilaginous meniscus is seen. Paraffin section, Masson's trichrome stain. Magnification: x2 when width printed at 10cm.
