The position selected, while itcommands a full view of Newburgh Bay, is on theedge of a wood, and on the verge of a plateau that al-most overhangs a deep ravine. The rocky sides of thisgorge are clothed with sturdy pines and hemlocks, andthus often shut out from the eye, but never from theear, a turbulent mountain stream that roars throughthe long, narrow pass, and falls some two hundredfeet in a series of rapid, successive leaps within a shortdistance of the house. There is also a quieter brookthat winds its way through the property, and yet an-other smaller rivule
