Heengaged in the carpentering tradeand became foreman for several largecontractors, remaining with onebuilder for sixteen years and actingaltogether for more than twenty-liveyears as foreman carpenter beforeentering tlie citys employ. In the civil service examinationfor carpenter he received 100 percent, and won the commendation ofthe city officials by his attention toduty and skill, with the result that in1901 he was appointed of Buildings. Mr. Tierney has been an activemember of the Carpenters. Cnion. X^o. 22. since 1882 and belongs tothree other organizations. He married ^liss Mary A. Mitchell in 1886and thev have a dauhter.
