Hundreds of Shiite Muslim mourners were detained by the Indian police as they tried to take part in the procession. Muslims all over the world mourn during Muharram, the first month of Islamic lunar calendar, the slaying of Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was assassinated by his political rivals along with 72 companions in 680 AD in Iran. Shiite Muslims mourn by flagellating themselves with knives and swords.
