In Cabbalistic thought, and in astrology, the number 72 is linked with the length of human life. The rational is that since the Sun takes a period of 72 years to precess through one degree of the zodiac, a human being is born with a degree, and dies when the solar connexion with that degree is broken. This explains why 72 appears in so many arcane contexts, and why it is held to be the number of Life, in a physical sense.
