The latter, secretary to thecouncil, obtained, in 1021, a grant of the lands between Salem andthe Merrimack ; and next year, in conjunction with Gorges, of thosebetween the last-mentioned river and the Kennebeck, as far as theSt. Lawrence. In 1629, and again in 1635, when the company wasbroken up. Mason acquired fresh patents for his portion, which thenreceived the name of New Hampshire. In 1638, however, beforethe settlement had come to any maturity, he died, and his familywere unable to derive any benefit from this vast donation.
