In Jlay, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, 4thWisconsin Infantry, and served until July, 1862,wlicn he was discharged for disability. Soon re-gaining his health at his former home in New York,he re-enlisted, in Company A, 1st New York Artil-lery, and remained in the service as a private tu theclose of the war. There are flippant and carelesssouls wiio declare that Gov. Hoard and Phil Cheek, Jr., are the only private soldiers left in AVisconsin,At the close of the war lie returned to Wiscon
