Aschief-of-staff to General Nathaniel Lyonhe participated in the battle of WilsonsCreek, Missouri, August 10th. In the fallof the same year he was charged with theconversion of the First Missouri Infantryinto an artillery regiment, and with Bat-tery A, hastily forwarded from St. Louis,took part in the battle of , October 19th. On November21 st he was appointed by the Presidentbrigadier-general of volunteers, and onthe 26th he received a similar commis-sion from the governor of Missouri inthe Missouri State militia, with orders to 70.
